EK apologises for Threadripper blocks Water-cooling kit manufacturer EK has issued an official apology for the performance of its first-generation of waterblocks for AMD’s TR4 Threadripper platform. EK’s original Supremacy Evo TR4 block had a standard-sized CPU waterblock in the middle of a TR4-sized plate, meaning the waterblock wasn’t directly positioned over either of the dies under a Threadripper heatspreader. According to EK’s statement, the decision was ‘a result of an oversight from our side almost a year ago’, and the company will be discounting its first-generation TR4 waterblocks as a result. However, the company also claims to have now solved the problem by engineering a new cold plate with a much larger fin area, specifically designed to cool the two dies in a large TR4 package. Thanks to its use of MLC 3D NAND (rather than TLC), it provided long-lasting, consistently fast performance. If you didn’t necessarily want the fastest drive, but required rock-solid performance right up to the last gigabyte, all while having a reassuringly long warranty and endurance, it was the drive to get. SUPPLIER www.scan.co.uk Cooler Master’s MasterSet MS120 is the most expensive product in this Labs, and with good reason – it’s the only keyboard that’s packaged alongside a gaming mouse. The keyboard is by far the most interesting product in the box though. Cooler Master has built this unit with the aim of mimicking mechanical switches. The hardware beneath the MS120’s plastic keycaps still uses a membrane base, but it’s otherwise designed like a mechanical switch, so there’s a spring and plunger. Hands-on time reveals that Cooler Master’s hybrid switches are the closest option on test to a true mechanical unit. The keys have the loudest typing sound of any in this group, and they certainly feel tactile like a mechanical keyboard. They don’t have a bump in the middle…

SUPPLIER www.overclockers.co.uk The mid-priced SteelSeries Apex 150 is a curious beast – it’s larger and stands taller than every other keyboard in this test, but its buttons are more reminiscent of a laptop keyboard than the other keyboards here. The Apex’s 105 keys use SteelSeries’ thermoplastic design, which is built for low friction and impressive stability. It has an iron base, and SteelSeries boasts about its custom-tuned rubber domes and custom-moulded housing for each button. Get hands on, though, and the Apex’s buttons border on the unusual. The keys have plenty of travel, and they feel heavy enough, but the action is softer than the Corsair and Razer buttons when they eventually bottom out. With your PC all built, you now need to install Windows, ideally from a USB thumb drive (it will cost £99 inc VAT from www.scan.co.uk if you don’t have it already). Press F2 when your PC starts to enter the EFI, go to the Boot tab and set the first boot drive to your thumb drive. Restart your PC and go through the Windows setup process. Once Windows is installed, go to www.amd.com and download the latest B350 chipset and APU graphics drivers from the Drivers & Support section. Unlike all the other drives in this test, it’s based on planar TLC NAND rather than a form of 3D NAND, which you might think would suggest it’s at a disadvantage, given that 3D NAND is the newer technology. However, if it’s used in the right way, planar NAND can still produce good performance, so there’s certainly no reason to dismiss it immediately. This issue’s lead game review is of Subnautica,a splendid underwater survival game that everybody should play. While reviewing it, however, I was surprised to learn that its gorgeous seascape, which I had assumed to be procedurally generated, is in fact 100 per cent handcrafted, and remains the same (at least in terms of topography and biomes) no matter how many times you play. At first, I was surprised, as survival gaming and procedural generation go together like partisan opinions and the Internet. We need a reservoir revolution When it comes to water-cooling your PC, the reservoir is an often overlooked, but incredibly useful component. You need it to bleed air from your loop and, of course, to fill it. As this month’s SATA SSD Labs test has proved (see p42), SATA SSDs now run at such similar speeds that they’re all basically the same. This hasn’t always been the case, of course, with massive differences in performance and price in the first few generations of SATA SSD. However, this market has now reached maturity, with speed effectively limited by the SATA 6Gbps bus rather than any parts inside the drives. Beyond the usual factors, such as brand perception, reliability and warranty, the only factor that really differentiates one SATA SSD from another now is cost per gigabyte,which effectively means they’re now commodity items. When folded up, the Magni-viewer is around the size of a book and has plenty of room to fit whichever model of phone you might use, even with a third-party case on it. Portability is the big advantage of the Magni-Viewer, and it’s ideal if you often happen to find yourself in places where your phone is your only device for watching video. How we test SATA drives might not represent the glamorous end of the SSD market, but they’re fast enough to cope with large file transfers, while offering quick Windows boots and fast game loading times. Some games still take a while to load, but the bottleneck is seldom storage, unlike in the days of hard drives. What’s more, there are a couple of exciting new additions to the world of SATA SSDs. Both Samsung and Micron have released brand-new models, and while performance is still limited by the SATA interface, capacities are up and prices are set to trickle downwards. How we test It’s important to get it right when you’re choosing a gaming keyboard. After all, the keyboard and mouse are the devices with which you’ll have most contact when you’re playing games, as well as typing. Not everyone has more than £100 to spend on the latest mechanical units, though, and not everyone likes the feel and sound of mechanical switches anyway. That’s where Membrane keyboards come in. Beagle Point is a nondescript star system suspended in the misty void beyond the Milky Way’s spiral arms, over 62,000 light years away from our local star, Sol. It became famous within the Elite Dangerous community as one of the most remote charted systems in the game’s simulated galaxy, discovered by a player known as Commander Erimus One during his 2015 ‘Distant Suns’ expedition to map the most remote system possible.
