Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a treatment that aims to restore good bacteria in the gut to aid optimal function. The process involves transferring beneficial bacteria through a processed mixture of liquid stool from a healthy donor to the intestine of a patient lacking essential gut bacteria that the digestive system needs to operate properly. It's used when antibiotics and other therapies fail. Research has shown that FMT has been successful in treating chronic diarrhoea, IBS and inflammatory bowel diseases.
