Childhood memories of being marched around sleet-driven town walls had given me a certain antipathy to Berwick-upon-Tweed, but when friends from down south booked a few days on the campsite it made sense to meet up with them. Even more sense when Covid changed so many other plans and seeing long-distance friends became an unsatisfactory digital experience. Caravan, motorhome and holiday home maker, the Swift Group, has donated £30,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support. The Hull-based manufacturer raised the funds through a recycling of goods scheme – which has been running at the company since 1995 – in which staff have the opportunity to purchase damaged or unsellable items in exchange for a charitable donation. “Any kind of redundant or surplus materials that we have in the factory – which could be anything from offcuts of wood, which employees often use for firewood, or any slightly imperfect items, like a scratched microwave – that can’t be used in final products; employees have the chance to purchase them,” explained Swift’s Content Marketing Manager, Cheryl White. “They then take that home knowing money is raised for charity.” It also includes…

The UK’s biggest nature challenge – 30 Days Wild – is back, and this year it is supported by The Vamps’ guitarist, James McVey. Every year The Wildlife Trusts encourage people of all ages and from all backgrounds to do one wild act every day in June, with the aim of connecting people with the natural world. Two million people have participated since the challenge started in 2015, and last year alone, participants completed over 16 million acts of wildness, from listening to birdsong to simply eating outdoors. Other suggested wild acts include litter picking in your local area, bug-hunting and even taking on a fundraising challenge for wildlife. My column this edition is a little different as my ‘pitch’ for a weekend earlier this year was actually in a car park at the NEC in Birmingham. It was a bright frosty Saturday morning when Steve and I rocked up to the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show 2022. For every show we’ve ever visited, Steve focuses on the caravans and motorhomes and I focus on the plethora of wonderful, creative businesses that gather around the caravan, camping and motorhome communities. These businesses – often quite small – clearly recognise our community as one that has value and they invest in being part of this show. The Camping In The Forest network of campsites could be expanded after going under new ownership. Forestry England and Forestry and Land Scotland bought the business from the Camping and Caravanning Club. With staycations on the rise, the purchase could also see the expansion of the existing network of 16 campsites beyond its existing locations, enabling more people to get closer to nature. The campsites will continue to be operated by the Club in 2022. “We aim to connect everyone with England’s forests by creating and caring for woodlands to help businesses grow, for people to enjoy and for wildlife to flourish,” Forestry England Chief Executive, Mike Seddon, said. “This commitment enables us to plan for the future. Llanberis Touring Park, set in the Snowdonia National Park, has won a series of accolades at the recent Loo of the Year Awards. The site, which is owned by Shrewsbury-based Morris Leisure, received the highest diamond grading for its washrooms, which also won the national category award for holiday parks in Wales. Park managers, Jo and Leo Freeman, also collected the overall Individual Washroom Cleaner of the Year Award for the UK and Ireland. “Why on earth are you going to the Lincolnshire coast?” we were asked more than once before we set off. The simple answer is that we had started our journey around the English coast in Northumberland and Yorkshire the previous year and we were picking up where we’d left off. As we discovered, there is much more to this stretch of coast than we could imagine. In the space of a week, we encountered the second-longest single-span road suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere, the longest listed building in England, the innards of a North Sea trawler, a nature reserve that doubled as an RAF bombing range, seaside donkeys, a Cloud Bar, bubble cars galore and more.
