Three different locations had to be combined to produce the Desert Garrison Attack. The IRT Powerhouse (Interborough Rapid Transit) was built at the beginning of the 20th Century to power the New York subway system, which was then being built in Manhattan. It was designed in the form of a classic temple to pay homage to the powerful growth in industry of that time and still stands at West 59th Street. In 2017 the building was designated a New York Landmark. The station no longer provides power to the subway, but since the 1950s it has been occupied by Consolidated Edison who use it to supply steam around New York City to heat buildings, provide humidity control and steam cleaning. Even if this material is simply composed of a few nodes, the result that can be achieved is incredible and useful for many other materials. For this type of substance, I selected the Physically Based (Metallic/Roughness) Graph Template, and I kept all the default outputs since they are necessary for this material. At this point we can start to add the required nodes, so from the Substance Designer library we need: the Fractal Sum Base noise (this is the main element of the texture of this material), the Height to Normal World Units filter, four Levels filters and the Gradient Map filter that will give colour to the metal. Housed in a modernist theatre in the centre of Amsterdam, Dutch National Opera is home to some of the Netherlands’ most prestigious opera performances, producing as many as 11 shows every year. In a bid to promote the coming 2020-21 season’s programme, the institution opted for a commercial redesign, commissioning a series of animated vignettes to represent each production. Dutch National Opera looked to attract new audiences to the theatre with a modern approach. Taking inspiration from innovative artists on Instagram, the organisation decided upon a human-led aesthetic with movement at the heart of the design, which required body motion data captured from real performers. In the sixth century Chang’an was one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world. “Weta Digital designed the Imperial City based on Chang’an, Xiangyang Tangcheng Film and Television Base backlot, and production designer Grant Major’s [The Meg] designs for the main palace building,” states Mulan VFX supervisor Sean Faden. “But because main unit never shot there, anytime we see our actors in the Imperial City it is a digital recreation around them.” The entire Chinese studio backlot set was LiDAR scanned. “That was the largest LiDAR scan Weta Digital has ever done. 250 square metres,” notes Weta Digital VFX supervisor Anders Langlands. “The LiDAR and texture photogrammetry were used to build a construction kit of modular building pieces that we could then utilise to create a huge variety of…

1. STORYBOARDS The first pass storyboards for this Peter Rabbit scene were drawn in pre-production by the story team. These drawings are the essence of the shot and were used as a guideline for the action and timing on set. You can see that the framing changes a lot from these boards to the final film, but the story beats are there. 2. In previous instalments of this tutorial series we planned the look and feel of our level, but other than the initial brief we don’t have any details of what our player will face, or the timings and location. We need to define the flow of the level. First off we will need to create a bill of parts that can form the list of what assets need to be created for modelling and texturing. Mike Griggs replies When there is an F-stop option on a 3D camera object, most often through the attribute or properties palette of an application, this is a setting which mimics those of real-world cameras. An F-stop (also known as an F-number) is the width of the hole (or aperture) that the aperture blades create in the camera lens. The bigger the hole, the ‘larger’ the F-stop number. The easiest way to read an F-stop value is to think of it like a fraction where an F-stop value of f/2 equals an aperture of approximately half the diameter of the lens. Cox and her team have created visualisations for museums, exhibits and even feature films.
