Fortunately, the owners of this unit were agreeable to a ‘back to the bones’ renovation, which included removing the dated stucco walls and ceramic tiled floors. The unit was then refinished with new square set solid plaster to the walls and ceilings and faux timber flooring. Due to the size of the apartment, the kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as the walls and ceiling are all finished in white and the existing anodized aluminum window and door frames have been softened with the addition of white plantation shutters. Navy blue was chosen as the accent colour throughout. The bedrooms feature whitewashed rattan furniture, white bedcovers with navy cushions and bed end blankets. Mixing a handful of design styles is often a risky business, but in the case of this new build, breaking the rules definitely paid off. The generously proportioned home expertly fuses a range of influences to create a comfortable and luxurious space that’s perfectly in tune with the Queensland environment. “It’s a unique melting pot,” says architect Bayden Goddard from BGD Architects. “We used tin roof and weatherboard, so it picks up the Brisbane vernacular, then we’ve spiced it up a little bit.
