“When I read about the Second World War (1939–1945), Britain’s colonial forces only ever receive a fleeting mention. Yet, 2.5 million colonial soldiers (the largest volunteer army of all time) fought alongside the British forces, and of these soldiers, 87,000 died. However, their contributions rarely get a mention in school assemblies or news articles. My interest in this part of history started while visiting relatives in India. I spotted a photo of their late grandfather in military uniform.
Now, I am raising awareness of their sacrifices on Remembrance Sunday. Colonial soldiers faced discrimination, their wages were lower, living conditions worse and it was harder to be promoted.
