Probably more easily dredged from the brain than some historical facts, thanks to the recent popularity of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall , there’s also the useful mnemonic that helpfully encapsulates the fate of Henry VIII’s six wives in turn: ‘divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived’. And, if you’ve survived that question, how do you then remember which lucky lady was which? There’s another helpful mnemonic for that too: ‘All Barons Should Carry Heavy Parcels’, which should prompt the recollection of Aragon, Boleyn, Seymour, Cleves, Howard, Parr. Sadly, for the first names, no one yet seems to have obliged with a suitably catchy memory aid.
