On this day, the UK National DNA Database was launched – the world’s first national DNA database. It holds samples from crime scenes and police suspects. By 2020, it had 5.6 million profiles, excluding duplicates. Samples from those who are not charged or convicted are deleted. There have been 820,000 matches to unsolved crimes since 2001. People’s skin or blood samples are also kept, linked to the database. Because DNA is inherited, the database can identify many others related to a database subject.
