On this day, in a referendum, Australia voted NO to becoming a republic, instead choosing to keep the British monarch as its head of state. Formerly a British colony, in 1907 Australia became a ‘self-governing dominion’ within the British Empire. Opinion polls had seemed to show that most Australians wanted a republic. Nevertheless, nearly 61% voted NO. However, it seems many voted NO because they didn’t like the plan that a president would be appointed by Parliament with a two-thirds majority, instead of being directly elected by the people.
