In September 1983, an interesting repaint meant much more than just a new livery, As a High Speed Train set emerged in InterCity colours (issue 27), it essentially marked the dawn of sectorisation, which would progress slowly from 1984 and become the new structure of British Rail from 1987.
The new sectors were:
■ InterCity - for all the fast routes of high-speed travel, such as the East Coast, West Coast, Great Western and Great Eastern Main Lines.
■ Provincial - for all the ‘local’ trains and branch line trains, so most of Scotland, the rural lines in Wales, plus the secondary lines.
■ Network SouthEast (from June 1986, issue 59) - for the commuter lines emanating in all directions from London to Northampton, Peterborough, King’s Lynn, Dover, Brighton, Portsmouth,…
