Drivers working for Southern are already operating door controls on 11 routes beyond the longstanding ‘driver-only’ inner suburban lines, according to the company. It means that drivers operate doors on over 70% of Southern services, up from 40% three months ago, on days when they are not on strike.
Spokesman Roger Perkins told RAIL that the company had extended driver-operation to 11 routes, with a second member of staff as an on-board supervisor (OBS) to help passengers. He explained that five routes had been converted since October: Bognor Regis/Littlehampton-Brighton/ Haywards Heath, Horsham-Dorking, London-Brighton, Redhill-Reigate, and Three Bridges-Bognor Regis.
Since the start of January a further six routes have switched, he said: Barnham-Havant, Brighton/ Haywards Heath-Eastbourne/ Ore, Brighton-Seaford, Havant-Southampton (via Swanwick and Eastleigh), London-East Grinstead, and Redhill-Tonbridge.
