ONE day in the late 1970s, two market stallholders came up with the idea of opening a takeaway – selling sweetmeats and vegetarian savouries. At the time, vegetarian takeaways were rare but the stallholders, Pushkar Maharaj and Ramlal Satgoordas, knew their concept had the potential to grow into a lucrative business. They opened Indian Delights in the heart of Overport, above the Gitanjali Cinema. In 2012, they moved the business to premises across the road after the building was bought to open a supermarket. THE Rotary Club of Reservoir Hills was chartered on March 27, 2005, and celebrated its crown birthday on March 27. The club has become a well-recognised body in the community, offering humanitarian aid to individuals and families. This is done not just within the community of Reservoir Hills but surrounding ones as well. The club is part of an international service organisation known as Rotary International. Its aim is to bring together professional and business leaders in the prospect of providing humanitarian assistance and further peace and altruism throughout the world. THE Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit of the eThekwini Municipality is spearheading a One City One Book campaign and is calling on authors to nominate their books for this year’s edition. The campaign started in 2013. Msawakhe Mayisela, the spokesperson for the city, said the aim was to empower local authors while encouraging a culture of reading. “We shortlist books and then choose one book based on our criteria. The aim is for everyone to read and experience that book, and in turn, encourage reading for all.” He said the chosen book had to represent the demographics and socio-economic dynamics of the city. I WISH to thank the POST for the recent appropriate coverage on the movie The Kashmir Files and I wish to reply to Mr Ebrahim Essa on his opposition to the same. Mr Essa makes several contestable statements that reflect his ignorance about his knowledge of Indian politics as well as of his own religion. IN THE State of the Nation Address, I spoke of our initiatives to strengthen the criminal justice system. I said we would make resources available to recruit and train an additional 12 000 new police personnel to ensure that the SAPS urgently gets the capacity it needs. I also said we would be giving attention to the re-establishment of community policing forums to improve relations and co-ordination between local police and residents of the areas they serve. PLANS are under way to ensure more resources are invested in the police, President Cyril Ramaphosa told a panel investigating the cause of the July unrest. He was testifying during the South African Human Rights Commission’s national hearings on Friday. He said the Africa report, which was compiled by experts and submitted in December, detailed the response of the various state entities to the unrest.
