The Constitutional Court recently dismissed an urgent application by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) for the elections to be postponed to February 2022. It ruled that voting must go ahead on any date between October 27 and November 1. Following the court ruling, the IEC reopened the process to register candidates for the elections. This will allow political parties and independent candidates another opportunity to nominate candidates after the registration weekend. Registrations for the election will take place from September 18 to 19 and every eligible person should make it their responsibility to register. On Friday, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) said the approval followed a submission by Pfizer on the safety of the vaccine for that age group. Sahpra said the two-shot vaccine would be administered the same as for those in the older age groups. It has also approved the trial of the two-dose Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine to be tested on children aged between 6 months and 17 years. A TEXAS law that aims to eliminate almost all abortions in the state is part of a long-standing nationwide movement to restrict the right to abortion. The Texas law went into effect on September 1 and severely limits the right to have an abortion in that state. DURING the process of healing, forced forgiveness is not the best option. People are hurt and leaders and political parties feel the pressure to ask people to forgive those that wronged them. THE Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) made the correct decision by having a voter registration drive preceding the candidate registration process – adhering to the Constitutional Court judgment and in line with our constitutional rights to free and fair elections. This was after the Pretoria High Court recently ordered the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Medical and Dental Professions Board (MDPB) to allow students to write the OSCE, a practical examination. If they pass, they will be allowed to join the Department of Health’s internship programme where they will work in local hospitals.
