TO BE OR NOT TO BE
Fulltime freelance outdoor writing in Australia is a precarious career and the few who have made it are not rich. The late, Vic McCristal made a living from it, as does gun writer Nick Harvey, who has been in the game longer than me.
Others who have made it have backgrounds in photography, publishing, ghost writing, corporate, resume, speeches, radio and TV, proof-reading, editing, DVD presentations, lectures and promoting — people like Alex Julius, Steve Starling and Ron Moon. Oddly, Ron is the only one who has made it as a motoring and travel writer specialising in 4WD adventures after years editing 4x4 Australia magazine.
