ONE in every 100 people is estimated to suffer from autism, but a cure for the brain disorder could be on the horizon! Recent research indicates blocking specific cells during pregnancy could prevent the disorder from developing in children. Scientists at NYU Langone Medical Center injected pregnant mice with an acid to make their immune systems produce the protein IL-17a, which helps fight infections. They found when the levels of the protein are too high in expectant mice, autism and diseases like asthma and irritable bowel syndrome can develop in fetuses.
