Building this issue around the new season was a challenge for several reasons. I often find the experience reinvigorating in its nature, but with a burgeoning season marred by monumental losses, it was necessary to reflect. Our new heritage issue examines the topic of our shared history – the ways in which it binds us, and potentially opens up new paths for the future. What we finally felt, in light of these losses, was an overarching sense of hope. A future crafted on the foundations laid by André Leon Talley, and with the endless possibilities championed by my friend and collaborator, Virgil Abloh. In 1998, Swiss watch company Swatch, working in collaboration with MIT Media Lab, pitched an unorthodox idea: to abolish real-world time and replace it with an internet-friendly time system without the need for multiple time zones. This Swatch Internet Time would not be measured by the sun and moon, but rather 1000 ‘beats’, each lasting one minute and 26.4 seconds, per day. “The loudest story always silences the other voices around it,” observes an unnamed narrator in Korakrit Arunanondchai’s four-chapter cinematic incantation Songs for Dying (2021). As the camera switches between panoramic views of past Thai kings on a Bangkok government building, footage of protest marches and the prehistoric sanctuary of Göbekeli Tepe, Turkey – the oldest temple ever discovered – the film and its reciprocal counterpart, Songs for Living, draw us in into the splintered, cyclical narrative of life, death, memory and rebirth. In Arunanondchai’s chimerical world-building, everything is a story – including time itself. Ideologies, belief systems and cognitive structures attempting to make sense of materiality are fictions we experience collectively. The way hair and beauty looks are interpreted and disseminated now is different from at any other time in history. Historically speaking, hairstyles have always been loaded with symbolism and personal meaning – usually bearing cultural and/or political significance for a particular demographic. In the 1960s, the skinhead subculture emerged in the UK as an emblem of working-class solidarity. Across the Atlantic in the same decade, the civil rights movement was gaining traction and the afro fast became a visual marker of Black pride as part of the natural hair movement. From European aristocrats sporting wigs to signal their upper-class status in the 18th century to the religious connotations of dreadlocks for Rastafarians, the reasons behind different hairstyles throughout time have been manifold. When Virgil Abloh died in late November 2021, much of the international outpouring of grief focused on his creative mind. He was one of his generation’s great innovators, a civil engineering undergraduate from Chicago who conquered the heights of luxury fashion and broke down barriers for other Black creatives in the process. But what people didn’t talk about, at least not nearly as much, was his right brain – his ability to fuse strategy with creativity, to look at ideas as bricks to shuffle around, be replaced, thrown out and reordered. Founder Clem Macleod was reading the works of late postmodernist writer Kathy Acker when she chanced upon her biography, written by I Love Dick author Chris Kraus.
