Cyclists have been touring by bike since the time of its invention. Up until a few decades back, the way to go would have been a steel-framed, drop-barred tourer – Dawes, Claud Butler, Raleigh for example – decked out with a rack or two, Ortlieb or Carradice panniers, and a bar bag for good measure, with an extra pack or tent strapped to the rear rack.
