It has been a busy month here at Caravan World headquarters with reviews in Coffs Harbour, NSW, and Ballarat, Vic, a caravan show in Melbourne and our annual Caravan of the Year event at Warrnambool, Vic. In between, we have been working on our caravan to prepare for a trip north later in the year. The suspension system in your caravan plays a vital role in how it handles various road conditions. Suspension smooths out the forces imparted on the caravan by bumps and holes in the road. This is achieved with two critical components — springs and dampers (usually referred to as shock absorbers). Springs compress to soak up forces. Caravan suspension springs generally come in three different types. Coil springs, leaf springs and airbags — more detail on these later. Dampers slow down the spring as it returns from its compressed state. This is a critical function otherwise your caravan would bounce up and down uncontrollably. Little box trailers with leaf springs usually don’t have shock absorbers and it is not unusual to feel and hear them bounce significantly, particularly when empty. Dampers…

I come across many small-volume builders who produce about a hundred units a year. One of my friends, Nicole, lost her husband Don a year ago to a rare form of cancer. Their story is one you hear too often, sadly. He had given up work at 56 to enjoy an early retirement. Both avid campers and caravanners, they purchased a new Jayco van in the early stages of his cancer diagnosis. Don, ever the optimist, was determined to fight this cancer. Jeannie’s husband Aeneas died from malarial dysentery on 16 March 1903 and Jeannie returned to Melbourne, 13 months after her arrival at Elsey Station, never to return.
