Giants often appear in folklore and myths as monsters and antagonists that evoke terror and remind us of our body's frailty and mortality. But there are exceptions. Nature's oxymoron, baleen whales are some of the largest animals on Earth, yet microscopic zooplankton, krill and small fish sustain them.
Three of the baleen species, southern right, Bryde's and humpbacks, are too massive to keep in a zoo, so you have to seek them out in the wild. But even then, a sighting isn't guaranteed. From a boat, you might spot a round flat patch, a footprint caused by a tail, or glimpse a low spout of water from a blowhole. Then, nothing. A whale has vanished, deep dived beneath the ocean surface, holding its breath for eight minutes.
