But according to a new book, unexpected further tensions have formed between a pair who have recently felt unbreakable: King Charles and his eldest son, Prince William.
The surprise revelations were made in Catherine, The Princess of Wales, the upcoming biography of Kate Middleton by royal expert Robert Jobson.
