It was an early morning hunt on the backdoor step of Mudgee in Central NSW. It didn’t take long as we arrived to the property and we saw a beast of a boar coming off a dam. The dogs shot straight off the Ute and sped off in pursuit of the brute. The dust flooded the horizon as the battle began. They had been tracking him for a while and when I say a while, I mean eight years! We’d hit him up a few times, but this big fella was wise to say the least. When time is on our side, we take advantage of having a vast backyard called Cape York right on our doorstep. Our family trips always create life skills. We live simple lives, love the bush and always enjoy huntin’ hogs with our two dogs Burr and Hoss, while taking our two kids Naveyah and Harlen on our adventures. We went out hunting deer in the hills for our Anzac week hunting trip with my young son George. We had been sleeping on the ground in swags and after the fourth day, we were tired, sore and ready to give up. George convinced me 'not to quit’ and go another night, but it had been hard work hiking the steep hills. I felt like an old man, but was lifted by my seven year old’s enthusiasm! We changed properties to another farmer and found out that a big boar had been evading the local pig doggers. The paper-thin snowflakes fell from the sky and the light breeze pierced the upper body as I stood whistling and calling out to my dog Jeep, who was off scenting a boar he smelt an hour earlier. My bitch had come back, but she was only a short-range finder. On the other hand, my pack leader was missing and I was starting to stress as I knew the type of hilly country we were in, was unforgiving. After a few cyclones and a heap of rain in the Cape, the hunting was limited and the grass was high. I took my 10year old dog for a retirement hunt and got onto a mob early. My young bitch pulled up a young boar and the old fella disappeared. He ended up 500metres away covered in blood and holes swinging the biggest pig I’ve caught up The Cape so far. 2018 started for our family with the arrival of our first-born son Morgan in early January. I didn’t get out hunting for a few months and the dogs didn’t get up to much apart from lying around and listening to the new arrival. I’m sure I’m not the only one to be having the time off when the newborn comes along, but it’s all worth it in the long run! Over the next few months, I was able to do a few ripper trips out and around home in The Gulf and hammered into the numbers with a fair few of the pigs over the 100kg mark. Last issue I wrote about my new pup Panda; and well the story gets better and better! Over the Easter on the Anzac break, I went for two runs with Panda and Dallas. Arriving early on Saturday morning, Chloe and I cruised the usual spots, but surprising there was absolutely no sign whatsoever, we poked through the 7foot high spear-grass to the other side of the station. I hunt a block out near Toobeah in Southern Queensland with my mate Chris Kopittke and his dogs. We were heading around a paddock of sorghum stubble. It was a pretty quiet night with not much about because the choppers had just come through and cleaned up seventy odd a couple of weeks before. Another winter of piggin’ is coming up. Piggin’ in summer is by far my favourite time to hunt, but I definitely won’t let the cold stop me. I find the seasons change alot of things around pigging and it even effects how the dogs hunt. I find our dogs will run greater distances because it’s not as warm and they tend to use there noses alot more in winter. Even though it’s cooling off, we have still been finding pigs swimming in watering holes and troughs. It’s a bit of a gamble where they will be, but it does pays off. I was lying in a hospital bed with a flap of skin from my shin hanging over my knee with my bone showing, waiting for an operation. I told the Mrs and daughter they had to get out to that stubble at night and get a boar for me with our new pup. They succeeded! We left Mundubberra in the afternoon and headed out west to stay on a friends place and set up our camp. Living in South Western Qld, I am lucky enough to live in an environment where wild pigs roam freely and there is a good population of them. I am a fully accredited shooter and with my family, I am always out on foot or spotting and stalking hogs on several local properties. On occasions, when the numbers are getting about, I set traps. My teenage son keeps me going, as he is always keen to help his Mum out and loves to hunt. Even my grandkids come with us and enjoy the outdoor family time.
