MEMBERSHIP DETAILS
The UK joined the European Southern Observatory (ESO), an organisation dedicated to ground-based astronomy, in 2002 – nearly 40 years after it was created by Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden in 1962. It is one of 16 member states, with the headquarters based in Germany and telescopes in Chile.
FINANCE
After an initial membership fee which cost in the region of £60 million, the UK has since handed over an annual subscription, which currently stands at approximately €26,640,000 – some 16.4 per cent of the ESO's revenue. The UK is a major financial contributor to the European Southern Observatory.
