The UK has been stripped of its measles-free status, after a surge in cases. The World Health Organisation had judged the country to have eliminated measles between 2021 and 2023, owing to there being no more sustained transmission of the virus. However, measles has since become re-established, with 3,681 cases in 2024. A rise in deaths also contributed to the rethink, said Denis Campbell in The Guardian. There were 20 deaths from measles in the six years from 2019, the same number as in the preceding 19 years. Meanwhile, uptake of the MMR vaccine has fallen.
