The move took nearly 12 hours and was a key step in the Artemis II mission to send a crewed spacecraft around the Moon, which could launch in February. NASA’s Artemis program aims to put humans on the Moon for the first time since 1972. In November 2022, Artemis I sent an uncrewed test flight around the Moon, which was the farthest a spacecraft has ever traveled before returning to Earth. Woodpeckers use their entire bodies for maximum pecking power. New research has discovered that woodpeckers can coordinate their breathing with muscle contractions while pecking, generating a force similar to that of a hammer or drill. Woodpeckers peck for several reasons, including to find food, build a home, and communicate with other woodpeckers. They can hit a tree with a force of 20 to 30 times their body weight, up to 13 times per second. How do they manage to produce such force without getting hurt? Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology designed a device that collects moisture from the air and quickly converts it into drinking water. The technology could be used in places that are very dry or where there is no easy access to clean water. The moisture is drawn from air and absorbed into a sponge-like material. Surfing the friendly skies Olga Naumova from Belarus has set a world record for the highest skysurf jump. Skysurfing is similar to skydiving—but with a twist. An iceberg known as A23a, which was once the world’s largest and oldest iceberg, has likely disintegrated completely, scientists said. Recent satellite images showed a significantly reduced A23a with bright blue pools of melted water across its surface. It was surrounded by hundreds of smaller chunks of ice that broke off from its edges. A23a had a long and eventful life that captured the attention of scientists around the world. The number of students enrolled in US colleges continues to rise, according to a new report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, a group that studies higher education. Community colleges, which offer two-year degrees, and four-year public universities were responsible for most of the growth. What did the report find? Total enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs at colleges and universities reached 19.4 million students in the fall of 2025—a 1% increase from 2024. Growth was particularly strong at community colleges, which enrolled 173,000 more students than in 2024, an increase of 3%. Public four-year institutions also experienced growth, with an increase of about 91,000 students compared to the previous year. Claudette Colvin, a pioneering figure in the early years of the civil rights movement, died on January 13 at age 86. As a teenager, her courage helped change American history and inspired generations to fight for justice. Colvin was born in 1939 and grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, where racist laws enforced the separation of Black and white people. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, she was riding a city bus home from school when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. “I could not move because history had me glued to the seat,” Colvin later said. So local experts came up with a solution: Relocate the beavers to areas where they could be helpful instead. What inspired your new book? I live in Colorado, which is full of abandoned ghost towns and mines. There’s an old mining town four miles from my house. People still live there, but it’s very much a relic of what it once was. Just down the hill from where I live is another old mining town that has been converted into tourist cabins. Researchers found evidence of fire set intentionally at an ancient clay pit, where early humans used to gather, in Barnham, England.
