Q I’d like to plant a new hedge and prune an existing one… but I don’t know where to start, can you help?

A For your new hedge, it depends whether you want to keep people in or out; or use it purely for decoration. To deter unwanted guests, choose something thorny like Pyracantha, holly or blackthorn (sloe). Otherwise, go for privet, yew or beech – they’re easy to maintain as if they get too big, you can cut them right back and they’ll shoot out from the old wood. For a low, decorative hedge, pick box; or for good looks, hedging roses such as Rosa rugosa, which has red rosehips in autumn.
