Heading home from work, a poster caught my eye.
Build a raft of old drink cans and float it to success in the world’s first Beer Can Regatta, it read.
It was such an unusual concept, I later mentioned it to my wife, Kaye, 27.
“Yeah, everyone’s talking about that,” she chuckled. “We should check it out,” I said.
It was 1974 and we’d been living in Darwin for two years with our kids, Scott, five, and Tracy, three.
I’d been posted there from Adelaide to set up a paint shop, and we loved the tropical lifestyle.
There was a thriving pub culture and the road from Katherine to Darwin was always littered…
