Producer Shaun O’Riordan penned the series’ title sequence, in which a voice declaims, “All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life.” (For those wondering, transuranic elements have an atomic number greater than uranium’s, and are radioactive.)
The voice then lists the “medium atomic weight” elements available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel. As many have pointed out, only four of these are really elements (steel is an alloy, sapphire a compound, diamond and jet forms of carbon).
O’Riordan spent a week coming up with the final wording. An early test, recorded on cassette (complete with piano accompaniment) began, “While time ruptures, basic elements will be used to repair the damage.” It concluded,…
