At first glance this may seem like a standard Mk2 Golf GTI and in many respects it is. The suspension, brakes, exterior, much of the interior and even the BBS rims will be familiar to past and present owners of a Mk2, myself included. Yet, the remainder of this innocent looking Golf couldn’t be more different to any other of the multitude of Mk2s that rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg decades ago. The JP-Performance story is well documented with 40-year-old Jean-Pierre Kraemer (JP) being something of a household name in Germany. JP has been in the automotive sector his entire working life; starting at Porsche, he then worked for 9ff for a period before starting a business with a partner. In 2012 he decided to go it alone and set up JP-Performance. JP now owns no less than eight companies mostly specialising in motoring niches. On Sunday 27th June 2021 Mk2 Spares UK held its second annual meet at its Melton Constable HQ in Norfolk. To say it was bigger and better was an understatement - the turnout was incredible, probably double the amount of cars from the previous year. The uncertainty of Covid meant it was touch and go as to whether the meet would even go ahead but after the green light was given, Matt Palmer and his team prepared the unit ‘COVID friendly’ and started organising. On the day, inside the unit they had a one way system selling various parts and merchandise, while outside it was packed full of Mk2 Golfs (and other VWs). North Yorkshire-based eDub Services was formed back in 2013 when Kit Lacey had a crazy idea, if you can swap an engine in a VW Type 2, why can’t you make it electric? “Once I had the idea, I couldn’t let it go,” Kit explains, “I purchased a conversion kit from the States and the rest is history!” In a bid to make a return on this substantial investment, Kit converted a VW type 2 camper to electric and offered it for hire, initially naming his company eDub Trips. “I just worked in my spare time back then with my Mum and Dad as partners,” he adds.
