It’s fair to say that all the cars featured in Performance VW over the 25 years have been hand-selected and special in one way or another. And you know what, looking back through every issue, there’s perhaps only a handful of cars that haven’t stood the test of time 100%. That’s not bad going when you think about it. While 2020 wiped the calendar clean, Nothing Leaves Stock’s yearly gathering of pals, VWs and more at Living Memorial Park picked right up where they left off in 2019. If you’re ever in doubt that you’ve left a mark on a place, then having something named after you speaks volumes. A chosen few wind up assigned to buildings, streets or monuments, but for Ged McConville it’s anti-roll bar mounts for pre-‘94 Polos. That and building one of the UK’s wildest, most influential G40s. Things were a little different at the turn of the Millennium. There wasn’t much of a Polo community, shows were wall to wall with Mk2 Golfs and – as a new driver with a Polo GT and an urge to modify – there wasn’t a lot of inspiration floating around. When I was asked to choose a car featured on these hallowed pages that really stands out in my mind, I thought it would be a pretty fun and easy task. The chaps at GDF Steelworks don’t sit still for long. For just £60 they are happy to convert any KR/9a or ABF 16v cam cover to run Audi R8 style coil packs. Okay, we know what you’re thinking. Space savers and spare wheels are boring. But if you drive a modern vehicle have you actually checked in the boot to see whether you have a spare? Looking back at the incredible cars we featured, it’s practically impossible to pinpoint a single vehicle. The one that undoubtedly kicked off PVW was Bini Yousaf’s Mk2. It represented the OEM+/big wheel/lowered stance movement that evolved into the Brit-look. And Bini was a larger-than-life character who loyally supported the mag. That was back in the mid ’90s when the Mk2 ruled the roost. It set the standard for how a modified GTI should look and perform, and still does. However, it was also the dawn of the Mk3 – a much heavier, inelegant replacement that most enthusiasts and purists were struggling to accept. If you’ve watched The Good Place on Netflix you’ll appreciate what I mean when I say being asked to pick one stand out feature car from the mag’s 25 year history resulted in an indecisive meltdown Chidi himself would have been proud of.
