The restoration of former County Donegal Railways 2-6-4t number 5 Drumboe is firmly back on track at Heritage Engineering Ireland’s Whitehead base, after engineers, furloughed from the start of 2021, came back to work on 1 May. The locomotive’s rolling chassis has been moved into the Henry Dunleath workshop where work is underway on replacing the cylinder cladding. A new bunker has been fabricated and, after assessment, it was decided to replace all of the cab steel, although some ironwork has been restored and re-used on both it and the bunker. Tracks both broad and narrow, on the Irish 5ft 3in and 3ft gauge, are being laid at the restored Belturbet Station by members of the Belturbet Heritage Railway group, writes Hugh Dougherty. Plans are to have 1km of narrow and broad gauge tracks laid on the former Cavan & Leitrim and Great Northern Railway of Ireland trackbeds, and terminating at the original station platform, used as an interchange between Belturbet’s two railways. The ambitious plan, which would be the first to restore broad and narrow gauge tracks running together in Ireland, aims to run the station’s existing 5ft 3in gauge Ruston diesel and a former Bord na Mona 3ft gauge Ruston, which saw service in Mayo, before being bought by a private owner for use on a short line at…

Without doubt the star at Darren Fuller’s revived Broyle County Transport Show that took place over 26-27 June near Ringmer, East Sussex was the Kemp family’s August 1909 Marshall No. 53082 2.5-3hp single-cylinder slide-valve portable. The engine was repatriated by Mike White in 2017 from Bologna, Italy. It has recently been retubed and with a good boiler report was put up for sale by Mike and purchased by Bryn and Marion Kemp and family on 12 June. When we caught up with the engine on its third steaming with the Kemps, the steam pressure went up up to 120psi working pressure when the safety valves were raised for the first time in their ownership. TASKER AND FOSTER ENGINES Dear Editor Following our conversation I thought you would be interested to see the attached photo of Tasker B2 No. 1431 following its conversion to showman’s tractor for J Rowland. As you know 1431 had previously served the French’s in standard B2 tractor form. I am unable to credit the photographer. In 1933 my great uncle Joe French moved from Plumpton to a property named Toll Lodge in the Warbleton area. Classic children’s film The Railway Children is to receive a sequel, more than 50 years after the original. Sheridan Smith will star alongside Jenny Agutter, who is reprising her role as eldest daughter Bobbie Waterbury. The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, which saw a spike in visitor numbers when the original film was shot there, is also featuring in the remake. Shooting on The Railway Children Return began in May, led by Bafta-winning director Morgan Matthews. The film is due in cinemas on April 1 2022. The original film was based on the novel by Edith Nesbit about three children who are shipped off to live in the country beside a railway line after their father is arrested on mysterious spying charges. Jurassic - the 1903 vintage steam locomotive on the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway, successfully passed her steam test, which enabled her to return to service when the railway reopened on July 24 for its summer season at Skegness Water Leisure Park. Jurassic was built in Bristol by Peckett & Sons for use in the quarries of Kaye and Co. Ltd, cement manufacturers, at Southam in Warwickshire, and was acquired by the LCLR in 1961. She is described as a coal-fired 0-6-0 saddle tank and her elegant lines, long chimney, shimmering brass and sinuous curves have earned her many admirers over the intervening 118 years. These days we really do take a lot for granted. Every size and type of construction machine can be hired or bought with a simple call or e-mail. The interesting part is what came before this; in particular during the 1940s to 1960s when the present types had yet to be invented. It coincided with the formative years of my youth. The beauty of these heritage machines is their lack of sophistication that makes them easily repairable for the enthusiast. This, coupled with their small size, makes them eminently collectable and showable. Young folk can relate to their small size. Mobile cranes are regarded as being confined to yards, warehouses and factories, as distinct from lorry-mounted ones which can go for miles on the highways. Some mobiles could propel themselves…

During a visit to Tasmania, Kevin Hoggett and wife Rika discovered the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, situated along a scenic drive by the Tamar River north of Launceston. Beaconsfield was a gold mining town where the last mine closed as recently as 2012. Plinthed outside the museum’s old winding engine house, marked ‘Hart Shaft, 1904’, is a portable boiler built by Johnson & Sons, Tyne Foundry, South Melbourne. Through the modern reception hall, in the first exhibition hall it became evident that the centre’s website does not do the collection justice! On display was an 1899 horizontal single-cylinder stationary engine which worked at a sawmill until the 1930s. Well I write this with Covid cases still rising, but we must keep going the best we can. I feel so sorry for the organisers of the Sheffield Steam Rally and the Lymm Rally, both called off at short notice, particularly the Sheffield event. It’s known the organisers had gone well beyond their requirements to comply with Government Covid regulations, but apparently not in the eyes of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. Sadly the event was cancelled at short notice; even Rother Valley MP Alexander Stafford waded in with a petition to ‘save our rally’ but to no avail. However the very same weekend down in East Sussex it was no bother at all for Darren Fuller to staged his first rally with the reincarnation of the old Broyle event on…

Well-known to so many steam and vehicle enthusiasts in the northern rally circuit Tim Holt sadly died on 8 June 2021 at the age of 81. He drove the Cumbria Steam Gathering on to great heights. The former president and rally organiser for 38 years was very much the force behind the success of this late July rally. Classed as controversial by some, he held the show together so well and had a wicked sense of humour. Originally from Rochdale he spent the majority of his life living in Cumbria. He had been a successful chairman of the NTET Rally Organisers Committee for a good number of years. Tim had worked as a prison warden and as a professional Heath & Safety officer. It’s only been going a few months now but Allison Engineering Steam Supplies, who purchased Craftmaster Steam Supplies in the spring, have been up and running and completed their 100th order at the end of June. Craftmaster Paints have been so busy they haven’t had the time to concentrate on the steam supplies part of the business that they had previously purchased, so this was put on the market and Allison Engineering purchased the stock. During a visit to the Enthusiasts’ Weekend on 12 June I noted quite a few changes since my last visit in 2019 and since the editor’s article appeared in Old Glory last year, writes Dick Bodily. An extension of one running line is to be made between Cogan Halt and Statfold Junction, which when completed will make interesting new workings possible as will connections from both lines to a new loop at Cogan Halt. The formation is already being laid and it is hoped to have track laid in the winter. Old Glory first visited Joe Rawlings of Dorset in late 2020 to record his progress in building his 4½” scale Foden C short wheelbase steam lorry from a Steam Traction World of Daventry kit, says Paul Ritchie. When we last met Joe, he had completed the rolling chassis with wheels, steering, and frames, and had recently taken delivery of the parts to construct the chimney and smokebox. The Sheffield Steam & Vintage Show, due to have taken place over the weekend of 26-27 June, was unfortunately cancelled at the last minute. A statement issued on Facebook read: “It is with great sadness and regret we need to let you know that this year’s event is now cancelled.” A statement on the situation will be made shortly, once we have time. This is not a decision on our part and not something we have done easily, but more coerced and forced into by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council after we have gone over and above what was already required of us. Two statues celebrating the work of women workers in Springburn’s locomotive building empire have been saved for posterity, reports Hugh Dougherty. Based on Roman goddess sculptures, the female statues, dating from the opening of Springburn Halls in 1902, which were gifted to the community by locomotive magnate Hugh Reid of Neilson Reid fame, stood on the frontage of the building until it was demolished in 2012. It was believed that the statues, one of which holds an 0-6-0 steam locomotive, with the other grasping locomotive engineering tools, had been destroyed in the demolition, but the figures were discovered in an industrial unit owned by Ng Homes, builder of flats on the site. Aveling & Porter LC8 No. 4885 genuine showman’s road locomotive Samson was seen publicly on Saturday 12 June back together in its showman’s guise for the first time. The Allison crew took the engine to the Horse & Jockey at Northwood, Shropshire where they were joined by David Goddard and his Stanley steam car. A number of enthusiasts came along to witness this unique occasion and see this mighty road locomotive on the road. Brian said the engine goes very well indeed and is in very good condition and ready to be rallied and enjoyed by whoever. The well-known Bressingham Steam Museum in Norfolk have resumed their calendar of special events. Over the weekend of 26/27 June there was a welcome return for their annual Steam Rally, a slightly scale-down version on previous years and with visitors being required to book in advance, but nonetheless eagerly looked forward to. James Hamilton went along to see the action. There were six visiting engines joined by three from the Bressingham collection and a number of particularly fine model engines, a couple of which were making their first public appearance since being completed. A retired senior bank manager, he had worked at Hudswell Clarke & Co of Leeds and served in the RAF prior to starting his career with Lloyds Bank in 1951. With the writing on the wall towards the end of UK steam in the 1950s and 60s, Lawrie took off to the Spanish narrow gauge lines for his steam fix – making 14 visits to Spain in the 60s to study the locomotives and subsequently wrote the books Renfe Steam Remembered and Spanish Narrow Gauge Steam Remembered. Part 2 DISMANTLING AND FURTHER ASSESSMENT I first removed the injection pump from the cambox, at that stage I considered the pump best left totally submerged in a container of diesel. Meanwhile, the injection pump cam followers responded well to a few days soak with penetrating oil. I then commenced totally dismantling the engine, making sure that all components were carefully stowed away ready for further cleaning and assessment. The remaining lubricant in the base chamber of the lower crankcase comprised mainly an evil black sludge; very little would readily drain off on its own. I resorted to dredging most out by hand, discovering a penknife in the process! First for assessment was the crankshaft, this was given a thorough clean prior to measurement of journals and crankpins. The crank…
