TOP STORY CFMoto have big plans for the UK in 2023, with ambitions to recruit up to 30 new dealers supported by backing from Pierer Mobility – the Austrian conglomerate behind the success of KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas, and the WP Suspension brand. It was announced in late October 2022 that KTM would take over distribution for Chinese firm CFMoto in the UK and Ireland from January 2023, with bosses now confirming plans for between 20 and 30 new standalone dealers this year, as well as more KTM-powered production motorcycles on the way. “It's already ongoing. Garibaldi Sottozero Split gloves £275 The blurb for these gloves says they are developed for the ‘harshest weather conditions’ including high mountain locations. I can only assume they visited on a particularly mild day – below 5°C the cold gets through to the extent that I need to turn on my heated grips. So underwhelming was the heat produced that I referred to the instruction manual to double-check red was full heat and the blue light indicated the entire glove was being heated – it was. All hail the tapered roller bearing! Mounted in pairs at either end of the steering stem, this team of captive rollers accommodates the combined steering, braking and accelerating loads of a typical ride, all the while maintaining precise clearances that are preloaded on installation. If fitted correctly they work perfectly for thousands of miles with little adjustment. However, over time, braking and accelerating forces, and bumps in the road will all take their toll, causing wear. Failures can also happen if a seal corrupts and lets in moisture, causing corrosion. The general rule is, the more extreme use your bike gets (off-roading, trackdays, stunts) the greater the frequency with which steering bearings need adjustment and maintenance. MotoGP is about levelling up. Or, with stifling technical regs and control tyres, electronics and now even tyre pressures… levelling down. Cutting bigbudget teams down to size. And to good effect. The result is ultra-close racing, often scarily so, and more race winners. But there is still work to be done. For example, Honda have now been levelled down a bit too far, after two winless seasons in three years. With the recent rise in popularity of PCP for buying bikes, comes the necessity to have fully comprehensive insurance cover. So how does this way of buying affect your policy, liabilities and the process of getting the best cover for the keenest possible price? Does PCP affect my insurance? Generally, ‘No’. Most riders who buy their bikes on PCP will roll their deal over to a new bike when the term comes to an end, hopefully using the equity in their deal as a deposit for the next bike. If you've noticed swing tags on motorcycle jackets, jeans and suits advertising a rating of A, AA or even AAA and wondered what they mean, here's the lowdown. Since 2020, all protective motorcycle clothing sold in the UK must be certified to CE standard EN 17092. Garments must have CE-armour at the elbow, shoulder, knee and hip, and pass tests for resistance to abrasion, bursting and tearing, among other things. There are three different classes of test: AAA denotes the highest grade of protection available, intended for the highest level of risk. Alpinestars Supertech R boots £529.99 You might think a range-topping boot designed for the racetrack isn't the best option for wearing every day, but they're beautifully comfortable. Despite the protection on offer and their racy pretensions, that comfort is at the core of why I've covered so many miles in these boots. They're obviously a race-styled boot with sliders in all the right places (a big one on your toes, which is replaceable, and a smaller one on the outside heel, plus a back plate) and a shin slider. The owner of a 98,000-mile BMW R1200GS was worried about a rattling noise coming from the back of the bike, but a couple of dealers had told him it was normal. Eurosport and BT Sport will disappear from TV screens in the near future following the purchase of the Latter by Warner Bros Discovery. Warner Bros Discovery already owns Eurosport, which has been a household name among motorcycle racing fans for over three decades. THIS WEEK KTM have confirmed rumours that they are to launch an SMT model based on the 890 Adventure, with details coming next month. A replacement for the old V-twin 990 SMT, spy shots of the touring of version of KTM's supermoto first came to light in October 2021. In a teasing release KTM said: “These Adventure motorcycles and naked bikes have had their own way for far too long. The typical Layout sees a bearing at the top of the headstock and one beneath, with the bottom and top yokes either side and the steering stem in the middle. The bearings need to be checked, lubed and adjusted every 10,000 miles or so. BRUCE'S TIPS Bumping up kerbs and wheelies will cause premature wear. 3 A smooth sweep?
