The whole definition of modern quilting is undergoing a bit of change within the industry (with much controversy to boot!) and I feel like it's important that we explain what modern quilting means to LP&Q . To me, modern quilting means bright, fresh colours, clean lines and use of solids but that’s not a definitive list – I also love quilts that use low-volume prints and more muted tones, print-on-print is one of my favourite looks and I’m a little in awe of improv designs. I might not be a fan of traditional prints and palettes, but I have a huge amount of respect for the techniques and designs that are forebears to today's modern quilting (whatever that means to you!). Sister Sampler Quilts is the first book from AnneMarie Chany of Gen X Quilters, a designer who is well known for her love of taking classic blocks and blending them with modern colour schemes. Quilters improve their skills over time, and it’s natural to want to learn something new. Quilt designs seem to be getting more and more intricate and challenging as we all get better, which might be why there are so many curves seen in quilting lately! Circles, arcs and free-form curves are definitely having a moment right now. CURVE INSPIRATION One designer that immediately comes to mind when it comes to quilts with curved piecing is Latifah Saafir. Her quilts are graphic and modern, and I just love her style. For some of us quilters there will come a time when we enter quilt shows. It’s a big step, regardless of the outcome. One thing is guaranteed, however; if you’re going to enter quilt shows, then you’re going to have to learn to deal with rejection. Whether it’s outright rejection in the form of not being selected to hang in the show, not placing or even if it’s just hearing passing comments about your quilt, rejection is almost guaranteed. The reasons for entering a quilt show are as varied and as numerous as the fabrics available to us. It’s a hugely personal decision and means different things to each of us.
