Q I was playing yesterday when I hit my ball just off the fairway and within 3ft of a large tree. I was unaware of how far the roots came out, so I wanted to check if the ground under or around the ball was free from them. I did this by using a wooden tee and testing within a few inches of my ball. Did I break any Rules in doing so, and if yes, what penalty should I have incurred? It's understandable that people are reluctant to give up five hours of their Saturday to endure interminable faffing and dawdling in front of them. They'll steadily lose their cool and end up leaving their weekly ‘leisure activity' more stressed than when they arrived, asking, “Why do I bother?” There are plenty of ideas about nine-hole competitions, even six-hole events, but the very simplest way to solve this problem is for everyone to play faster – walk faster, take less time over shots and follow all the usual guidelines for expediting the game.…

The takeaway is a crucial part of the technique, but many players ignore it in favour of other areas. However, if the club starts working on the wrong path, you will need to make compensations later in the swing to get the club back to the ball. The best-case scenario is a heavy draw or fade; the worst case is erratic ball striking. Use the following drill as a checkpoint to ensure your swing is starting neatly on plane. Place a headcover about 3ft behind your ball, directly on your target line (I'm using a karate pad that I use when I teach). How did you progress from playing into coaching? I went to America in the 1970s and had lessons from Gardner Dickinson. He was one of Ben Hogan's disciples and a great teacher. The Murcian resort remains popular with tourists from around the world thanks to its supreme sport and leisure facilities, diverse accommodation offering and first-class bars and restaurants. Just a year after turning professional, Wood plotted his way around Turnberry in 2009 with a stunning final-round 67 to finish tied for third, two better than the previous year when he shocked the golfing world, finishing fifth as an amateur.
