While chronological age is marked by the passage of time, scientists determine biological age through markers in DNA. Older age is associated with shorter telomeres, structures found at the ends of chromosomes, which have been described as similar to shoelace tips. Telomeres typically reduce as people get older, but recent studies have shown they can also be affected by environmental factors, such as lack of sleep and prolonged, intense stress. An international team of researchers attempted to clear the air about the pungent problem and quizzed around 6,000 adults in the United States, Britain and Mexico about their overall well-being.
