YOGESH Nanalal Gajjar, or Yogi as he’s known to many, has a distinctive style when it comes to portraiture photography. In his most recent project, Yogi’s idea was to create a crossover between English and French style projects by getting his model to blow glitter towards the camera. “My key goal was to capture eyes that reveal the story.” Yogi says. Model Yaz (Yogi’s top model) was able to provide a happy and glamorous look that instantly connects with the audience. “It captures that va va voom: British elegance and French grace!” he says, which is one of the main successes behind this shot. When it comes to shooting portraiture, communication with your model is key. Yogi truly believes in inspiring people to be themselves and having an open dialogue.…

TOP TIP Avoid making the sky look darker than the foreground, as this will look unnatural and simply draw attention to the filter. YOU can reduce the intensity of a bright sky and bring its exposure in line with that of a dark landscape by using graduated neutral-density filters. The trick here is to expose for the darker landscape (as above), then select a filter that is the correct strength to bring the exposure of the sky within the sensor’s dynamic range. You don’t have to do any complicated calculations: start with a two-stop or three-stop filter, take a test shot and check the histogram. If the right side of the histogram is pushed up to the edge of the graph, use a stronger filter.…

Speed and image quality is paramount to the work he produces, as editing rarely fits in with his client’s live reporting deadlines. THE Victoria and Albert Museum is expanding its collection of historic and contemporary photography, thanks to the transfer of the Royal Photographic Society collection – including over 270,000 photos and 6,000 pieces of camera-related equipment from the Science Museum Group. BOKEH is a Japanese word used to describe the blurred, out-of-focus parts of an image. The ‘character’ of the blur is determined by the aperture in your lens, which is typically circle-shaped. So if you shoot fairy lights out of focus, for example, they’ll appear as blurred circles. But you can go one step further and create custom bokeh shapes by making a simple DIY hack lens cap that fits over your lens! We decided to use coloured paper, as this also creates a filter haze that adds to the abstract effect. If you don’t want this effect, simply use black paper instead. 1 FIXED RANGE Cameras have fixed dynamic ranges, with some offering a wider dynamic range than others. 2 EXPOSURE DIFFERENCE Here, the exposure difference between the bright sky and the land below is too big. 3 SHADOW DETAIL The camera has given more prominence to foreground detail, which blows out the sky. 1 HIGHLIGHT DETAIL Exposing for the bright sky plunges the land into darkness, illustrating the problem clearly. 2 COMPROMISE? Expose for a midtone: you will get a brighter image, but may lose details in both highlights and shadows. 3 FIX THIS! To control the dynamic range, use graduated filters or take a range of exposures and blend them. RAW files are capable of holding a wider dynamic range than JPEGs, but both the histogram and the preview image that you see on the back of the camera are based on a JPEG version of the image. A raw file contains more information in the brighter and darker areas, which means that you can tease out detail that might otherwise appear lost when you check the picture on the rear screen. For instance, if you develop a raw file in Lightroom or Photoshop’s Adobe Camera Raw plug-in, you can apply a digital graduated filter on the sky, use the Shadows slider to reveal detail in dark areas and fine-tune the Whites and Highlights sliders to pull back detail in clouds and other areas in danger of being overexposed. HEAVEN Time-blending Because Fabio kept the camera in the same position for an hour, he was able to capture and blend long and short exposures. This meant he caught the last sun-rays in the foreground. “The long exposures were for softer shadows and blurred clouds, and the short ones for sharp grass,” he says. Margaret LLYN Gwynant is a very accessible location: the lake shore is just a few metres from the road. It was also just a few minutes’ drive from our hotel, making it the perfect spot to capture the scene at dawn. “We arrived just as the sun was rising and initially the colours were cold,” Margaret says. “I took this shot as the sky was beginning to warm up. The early morning meant that the lake was calm and the reflections were strong. Even if you only have a single sharp image, you can still apply the effect by creating the motion blur in Photoshop. The advantage is that the blur will be perfectly straight, but the downside is that it will lack the organic look and feel of in-camera blur. To create a layer of blur, duplicate the Background Layer by selecting it and pressing Ctrl/Cmd+J. Then go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur; when the dialogue box opens, set Angle to 90° and the Distance to an amount that stretches out the tall elements in the image. THE Belgian photographer Frederik Buyckx has been named Photographer of the Year in this year’s impressive Sony World Photography Awards, and picks up the top prize of $25,000 for the best photography series. Frederik’s winning ‘Whiteout’ set of images charts the transformation of the landscape as winter arrives in the remote areas of the Balkans, Scandinavia and Central Asia, and how the people and animals that live there cope with the extreme weather. Take three shots in five minutes HEAD out the front door of your house and take three photographs (no more, no less!) in the space of five minutes. This fun project isn’t a test – it’s designed to get your creative juices flowing! It’s important to not break the three-shot rule and to stick to the time limit. That way you’ll be forced to make creative and technical decisions under pressure, which will help you grow as a photographer. Two considerations to take into account are the time of day you choose and the weather conditions. You’ll get very different results depending on these factors. RETOUCHING and image manipulation have become so commonplace that many photographers assume they’re a necessary part of achieving the perfect picture. But while manipulation is an important – and, for some, enjoyable – part of certain photographic genres, it’s far from mandatory for other types of shot. When I started out with film photography in the 1980s, I had access to a darkroom, but I tried hard to achieve the look I wanted in-camera. Sure, I could correct images afterwards, but it felt much more satisfying to get them right at the point of capture. Today I apply those same techniques of careful composition, exposure and physical filters with digital imaging, and exploit modern technology to help me nail the result all in-camera. I use alignment grids to aid composition,…

Changing the exposure makes a landscape look brighter or darker and pushes the histogram to either the right side of the graph or to the left, but it doesn’t expand the overall dynamic range. If the histogram is squashed up against just one side of the graph, then either increasing or decreasing the exposure will move the histogram along the graph and can potentially pull the clipped information back within the camera’s dynamic range. Note this only applies if there’s enough exposure latitude. A narrow histogram has lots, enabling you to make fairly big exposure adjustments without losing any details, but landscapes are typically quite high-contrast scenes, with bright skies and dark foregrounds……

NEXT MONTH Working with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ALTHOUGH it’s possible to extract a greater amount of detail from raw files, you should still try to get the exposure right in-camera. If the bright areas have been extremely overexposed, they’ll contain no detail, and trying to rescue them in software will leave them looking muddy and featureless. If you try and brighten areas that were very underexposed, you may just reveal more noise.…

1 Leave some room It is tempting to get in as close as possible to your subject, especially with a macro lens, but leave a little room around the insect. This helps prevent you from spooking the insect, and allows some compositional fine-tuning later too. 2 Use continuous focus Switch the AF system to continuous so that the focus is constantly re-adjusting. This way, if the insect moves around a little, as long as you keep the AF point aimed on the right spot, the focus will automatically change with the insect’s position. 3 Keep the speed up Don’t shoot with a slow shutter speed. You need to be aiming for over 1/500 sec if you are hand-holding, but keep it as high as possible even if you are on…

George Rodger was a British photographer who had a life-long love of travel and adventure. Known as ‘the quiet Englishman’, he was a dedicated photojournalist and, together with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and David ‘Chim’ Seymour, he founded the Magnum Photos agency in 1947. What was his background? Rodger was born in Cheshire in 1908. He left school at 17 and joined the Merchant Navy and travelled the world. How did he start to find work as a professional photographer? Despite never having operated a studio camera, Rodger bluffed his way into a job as a portrait photographer for the BBC magazine The Listener in 1936. Afterwards he worked for the Black Star agency. 1 Pick a series The Systematic tripods come in three Series (3, 4 and 5). The middle Series 4 offers a good compromise between weight and sturdiness. 2 Leg section length The leg sections come in three lengths: standard, long and extra-long. With longer leg sections you don’t need as many sections to get a good working height, but the tripod is longer when folded. 3 Number of sections Series 4 tripods can have three, four or five sections. You choose a combination of leg length and numbers of sections to give you the working height, folded size and speed of operation you need. 4 Leg clamps The twist locks grip really tight and they don’t snag on straps or bags. 1 BLEND IN Shooting in sandy or snowy conditions rather than a wood? Hunt out a hide that can be specced in a choice of covers. 2 COVER UP Camouflage clothing only conceals your body. Break out your tripod and Bambi won’t be impressed. 3 PORTABILITY A decent dome hide may be the lap of luxury, but carrying several extra kilos makes it vital to plan your shooting. 4 EXTRA COVER Look for camo scrim netting that’ll make your hide almost invisible or naturethemed camera covers. 5 PATIENCE Even the fanciest hide won’t instantly inspire animals to strike the perfect pose, so pack plenty of provisions.…

IF you vary the width and height settings in the Filter > Distort > Displace dialog box, you’ll get different effects – but always make the height value double the width. Lower amounts such as 30 and 60 in the boxes will give gentle ripples, while higher ones like 400 and 800 will give a more intense effect. Trees are perfect for this technique because they’re tall and straight. And if you’ve shot them to extend from the bottom to the top of the image, you’ll enjoy perfect blur in the top half of the shot rather than empty sky. But with trees ticking all the boxes, it’s easy to be blinded to other options – many subjects that are tall and straight or fill the frame can also work well too. Skyscrapers and tower blocks in cities, for example, are definitely worth considering for this blur-blending effect.…
