Clutching my husband Miles’ hand, I listened to the doctor.
‘Your daughter has severe hearing loss. She’ll need hearing aids,’ he said, then measured up 3-week-old Matilda’s ears.
After, I burst into tears.
‘This isn’t fair,’ I sobbed.
‘We’ll figure it out,’ Miles, then 35, promised.
Born by caesarean in February 2016, Matilda had failed her initial hearing test.
Medics hoped it was just fluid build-up.
But at the Audiology unit, we discovered it was permanent, irreversible, caused by a genetic mutation Miles and I both carried.
For the next few weeks, I cried every day, worried for Matilda’s future.
