We had spotted a swarm of honey bees dangling on the thin branch of an oak tree. There must have been a few thousand of them, probably all attracted by a queen who was looking for a suitable place to set up a colony. It was a new year resolution that took us to Flamborough. In the dark depths of winter, I make far too many, and few survive long. This one was about visiting old friends. You know the sort I mean? The ones you knew well once upon a time, but the passing years and busy lives have reduced communication to just a few lines on a Christmas card. Shugborough Hall was home to the famous socialite and photographer, Patrick Lichfield. It is now owned by the National Trust. We decided to walk from the site to Shugborough, which gave us the chance to explore the wildlife not only of the estate but also along a section of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Metallic blue-green damselflies flew buoyantly from the leaves of wych elms and hornbeams, where they basked in the sun beside the canal towpath. They landed momentarily on waterside vegetation before heading off in pursuit of prey, tiny insects which buzzed the surface of the water. The dark patches on the wings of the males indicated that these were banded demoiselles. It’s lucky there were so many small insects about because swallows were also targeting them by…

Cannock Chase has the largest area of lowland heath in the Midlands. About 2,000 acres of it was given to Staffordshire County Council by the Third Earl of Lichfield in 1957 and it is now called the Cannock Chase Country Park. At five square miles, it is one of the largest country parks in Britain and there is a visitor centre at Marquis Drive, from which walks leaflets and advice can be gleaned. The heath is very special for wildlife and we had some wonderful experiences there. What looked like a fragment of shiny green paper blew into the air, fluttered erratically, landed on the ground and subsequently disappeared. Only its shadow was significant enough to catch my eye. When I tell friends that I’m going to the Howgill Fells for a long weekend of walking they look bemused and ask me what and where they are. “They’re the lumpy green hills between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales,” I explain, “You get a good view of them from the M6, south of Tebay.” To be strictly accurate, the Howgill Fells are part of Yorkshire Dales National Park and have been since its boundary was extended to meet that of the Lake District National Park. Although actually in Cumbria, they were deemed to have more in common with the neighbouring Dales, so were tacked onto them. Covering all bases Q We’d like to buy a cover to protect our caravan between trips. If I buy a universal cover, cover sizes depend on length. Where should I take this measurement from? A You can buy tailor-made covers for many caravan makes and models, but if you’re looking to buy a universal cover, measure the body length along the bottom of the caravan — just the body itself, and don’t include the length of the A-frame. This size should then fit with a certain cover size. This, however, doesn’t always work, as the choices for our older 14ft (4.27m) Bailey Maestro would be a 12ft-14ft (3.66m-4.27m) cover or a 14ft-17ft (4.27m-5.18m) cover.
