Wildfires have swept through Greece, particularly on the islands of Rhodes, Corfu and Evia, leading to thousands of people being evacuated.
What happened?
Local people and tourists were forced to leave their homes and hotels as fire spread across the islands by burning through plants, trees and buildings. More than 19,000 people on the island of Rhodes were moved to safety by plane or boat, while evacuations also took place on the island of Corfu. People sheltered in schools, airports and sports centres. Several travel companies cancelled flights to take tourists to Rhodes, and instead put on extra flights to bring people home. On 24 July, the UK Government said around 10,000 British tourists were still waiting to leave the island, along with Dutch, French and German people.
