BRIOCHE STITCH provides such a gorgeously squishy, bouncy fabric, and the technique has been used to great effect here by Sandra Nesbitt. Using two contrasting colours, she has created this scarf with a smart chevron pattern. The project uses a two-colour cast-on and brioche ribbing. ADDING WAIST shaping to a Fair Isle jumper with horizontal bands of pattern can be fairly straightforward, as increases can be worked in the one-colour rows between pattern bands. I’ve recently been designing a slipover for a friend to knit, who is not experienced in knitting Fair Isle. This has the great creative advantage that she has no assumptions about what is ‘possible’. She designed the stitch pattern, which is an all-over ten stitches by ten rows repeat. Because the slipover is to be for her sister, who has a neat waist and is not keen on straight-bodied knitwear, she asked me to incorporate waist shaping.
