Romance has always been a tricky subject in tabletop games. In the digital world across many RPGs, the romancing of characters is a standard feature, but across the table that becomes more awkward. We look into our friends’ eyes and talk of love and desire as characters we inhabit only briefly. Those moments need to be handled with delicacy and care, and you should always talk about them as players before engaging with them as characters. Some of us may never touch on such emotions in our play, but maybe we are losing something in shying away from those deep connections that bond us as people. The themes, however, don’t majorly matter. They are a nice window dressing to a series that focuses on card drafting and multiple ways to score. Mechanically, Point Galaxy falls somewhere in between Point Salad and Point City. A lot of its core gameplay mechanisms are very Point Salad-like, as players draft cards from a shared market tableau. Think Santa letters, apologies from the tooth fairy when they forgot to leave me some change. So, the first question here really is, what’s so bad about a Trevor? Bad Trevor is so named because the titular card is one that you really don’t want to have in your hand. That’s for two reasons: first being that if you draw this card, you must also pick up more cards; but also because if you end the game holding the card, you are the loser. These cute, clumsy, visually iconic and (nearly) monochromatic creatures are the fastest swimming birds in the world. I can’t imagine someone actively disliking them. Despite this, in the world of board games we flick them (Ice Cool), stack them (Penguin Party, Penguin Stack), flip them (Penguin Flip, Flippin’ Penguins), and, in countless games, simply shove them off the ice. Scope Panzer is a card game about tank conflict between American and German forces towards the end of World War II. Unlike the actual war, it lasts about 15 minutes and barely takes up half of a normal-sized table. Scope Panzer is a head-to-head battle of wits about hiding your war machines in dense forest and launching surprise attacks on the opposing side. The game is played on a grid of double-sided cards, representing either German-controlled or American-controlled forest. He was a prolific game designer in the 1990s, rising to prominence with Web of Power and cementing his reputation with hits including Coloretto, Zooloretto, China and Spirits of the Forest (AKA Richelieu). But he had been absent from the hobby for a while before returning with Fantasy Brewers. Schacht has also designed many children’s titles, and his ability to make passively interactive games with simple rules is a hallmark. The good news is that this continues here, as Fantasy Brewers is a light worker placement game with constraints that force players to fight for the same goals. This medium-heavy Eurogame sees you rebuilding a postapocalyptic civilisation by moving a cornucopia of different wooden pieces around multiple complex game boards. On your turn, choose an action by moving one of your workers along the task-selection board, then carry it out on either the main board, or your own personal one. Actions include planting two types of buildings (one of which generates resources, the other scores points), expanding the population to unlock bonuses or powering up your player console to ensure better income in future rounds. Known for creating the likes of Galaxy Truckers and Codenames, it was clearly going to take a special project to get his thinking cap back on. Cue Severton. The game takes Chvátil back to his Czech roots, using writer Jaroslav Foglar’s Rychlé šípy (Rapid Arrows) comic-book series as its source material. While the series is largely unheard of in the UK, Rapid Arrows was a huge hit when it was first released in pre-WWII Czechoslovakia and it endured well into the 1980s. In others, it’s a frenetic vegetable feast that keeps the table on the edge of their seats as they fill – and overfill – multiple tacos, while striving not to be the one with kidney beans or cheese spilling on them when it all gets out of control. While it’s difficult not to become preoccupied with lush re-releases of his biggest hits, such as Ra and Tigris & Euphrates, it may be surprising to find out that he’s still pumping out novel new works. Iliad is one such game, a competitive two-player tile-layer that recreates the mythic battle at the heart of Homer’s epic. One player takes on the role of Achilles and the other Hector, both vying for the favour of the gods so that they may best their foe. While you could accurately describe this title as a positional abstract, it’s worth noting that there is an underlying thematic aura that breathes life and tension into the experience.…

That’s Rival Cities, a two-player game from Hansa Teutonica designer Andreas Steding. And while it may not contain battles or dice, it couldn’t be more packed with tension, tough decisions and brutal, decisive endings. Packed neatly into an eight-inch game box, Rival Cities is well-produced and has functional artwork. More importantly, the iconography, rulebook and overview tiles are excellent. If you’re wondering where the name comes from, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. You can now create your own garden of Babylon on your tabletop, by building up a layered garden like a pyramid. Turn by turn, you choose cards from a shared board by sending your gardeners to one of the three columns. Polyomino Definition: A type of playing piece formed from a number of squares. Often found in games of tessellation, due to their ability to satisfyingly slot together. The word polyomino was invented by mathematician Solomon Golomb in 1954 to describe the shapes used in patterns, problems and puzzles in recreational mathematics. This gatewaylevel game sits in the top 30 on Board Game Geek at the time of writing, and Twisted Paths is its third major expansion (you will need the base game to play). Before we move to the main event, you’ll find a welcome selection of four Guardians, four Sites, eight Assistants, six Research and 10 Idol tiles in the box. You can’t have too much variety in Lost Ruins of Arnak, so no complaints, but while some of them are really appealing, none offer anything genuinely new in terms of gameplay. This time, he’s all alone, but it doesn’t seem to have harmed the process. Even the standard edition of Stupor Mundi has fantastic table presence. Halo: Flashpoint delivered that with an expertly reskinned version of Mantic’s Deadzone skirmish miniatures game. Feet First Into Hell is the second large expansion for the game, bringing in the tactical deployment specialist faction the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (AKA, the ODST). THE ISLE OF CATS Save as many felines as you can by fitting them nicely onto your personal ship. There are so many ways to score – and lose – points in this game that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of it all. At its crux, it’s a tessellating game played with various colours of tetromino, pentomino and hexomino tiles. The wild, Oshax cat tiles are obstructively irregular in their shapes, covering a lot of ground, but insisting everyone else works around them.
