The Young Architects Forum Korea was held the ‘Urban Manifesto 2024’ until Jan. 31, displaying the drawings and architectural plans of what over 40 young architects imagined for the future of Seoul. The exhibition was gathering the works presented in the Conference Party which have been produced over the last three years, and sharing the vision of young architects for the future. The exhibition was held in three places, the Onground gallery, Boan Inn, and the Common Building in Seochon. The SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation selected Jun Sojung as the winner of the 14th SongEun Art Award on Jan. 8. She presented the video works, Treasure Island and The Twelve Rooms which filmed the divers in Jeju-island and piano tuners. She followed the people who quietly act out artistic actions in their daily lives and express them through texts, photos, videos, and so on. The people that the artist focuses upon are the artists that exist in our society but are disappearing due to the modernization, such as masters of tight rope walking, sign painters, and tailors. Canadian architecture is not well known in Korea, besides from the fact that its primary form is wooden architecture. Some of the major offices in Canada include Patkau Architects, KPMB, and Saucier + Perrotte. 5468796, a young architecture group is also receiving worldwide attention. Patkau Architects is a Canadian architecture group which functions around John Patkau. They have been working mainly in Canada and around the world for the last thirty years. They were known in the 1980s for engaging with the surrounding context and having sedentary characteristic in their projects such as the Pyrch Residence. Their project Seabird Island School, from the 1990s, is always mentioned as one of the primary examples of tectonic architecture. The architectural archives is the focal issue of the architectural world today. Even Kim Swoo Geun, the representative architect of Korea, has no independent archives systematically built by an autonomous institution, and so we don’t have to mention other architects. Thus collecting information, drawing, photography and the models of buildings for simple surveys and research usually end up with scattered materials here and there with little information about the list, availability, owner, and location. This raised a discussion about the needs and general systems of the architecture archives. Inés Zalduendo is an architectural archivist. She holds a Diploma in Architecture, Universidad de Buenos Aires, a Masters in Architecture, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and a MS (Masters in Library and Information Science, with a concentration in Archives Administration), Simmons College. She is currently the Special Collections Archivist at the Frances Loeb Library of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design where she is responsible for Rare Books, and Archival Collections. Reviewer A I think it is a good method to attempt to tie up the relationship between architecture with its scenery, rather than a physical construction (objet). It is a good example of how the construction of a new building brings positive effects to the surrounding buildings as well. The method used for the interior materials is fancy. There are no extraordinary elements, but it is well-organized using conventional method of construction. Jangchung Gymnasium is back. The mecca of indoor sports for 50 years, ever since it was built, Jangchung Gymnasium went through a major renovation in 2011 and re-opened on Jan. 17. The fact that it is preserved in its original form by vitalizing the framework of the steel frame dome is particularly impressive. The gym was completed in Feb. 1963, as the first indoor sports stadium in Korea. Designed by the structural engineer Choi Jongwan, who studied structure in the USA, and the architect Kim Jong-Soo. It held an 80m diameter steel frame dome roof. A reinforced concrete substructure, 32 steel frame trusses and 13 looping trusses all made up the superstructure, while the exterior was finished with aluminum sheets. Patkau Architects has been in practice for over 30 years. In that time they have designed a number of significant projects in Canada and abroad. Their work has been recognized widely for its design excellence. Achievements include fourteen Governor General’s Awards, Canada’s highest honour, as well as numerous other accolades. In 1996, Kim Joon first visited Nanjido when the residences of the Nanjido people — most of them garbage collectors — were still partially remaining and the residents were protesting to the City’s council over their relocation. Behind this scene lies the turbulent history of the building and the closure of the Nanjido landfill, which had become a monumental landscape in Korea’s history of compressed industrialization and modernization. The garbage collectors moved into this marshy land from the late 1970s and continued to do so throughout the 1980s, persuaded by the newly built major landfill. Lee Leenam, who mainly produces videos through digital animation techniques, has attempted a stereoscopic installation. He enlivened the space by projecting a video clip of Renaissance statues while reflecting the materiality of the contemporary era by using the metal of plastic objects. A total of thirty pieces, including those exhibited to the public for the very first time, are displayed in Lee Lee-Nam’s personal exhibition ‘Lee Lee-Nam: Light’, in Gana Art Gallery Seoul from Dec. 16, 2014. In his book, however, he pitches issues to the Korean architecture scene and the public in a very realistic viewpoint. This is extremely interesting. As a compilation of diverse strands of comprehensive topics ranging from the current issues of Korean architecture to architecture education, with the overarching topic ‘commonness’, what stands out is the professor’s will to make this book exceed itself from being a mere architecture theory text book. The construction of Fort York in 1793 marked the founding of Toronto. The garrison was built as part of a military strategy to defend the nearby harbor. Originally the fort was located on the shore of Lake Ontario, however two centuries of development has radically altered the context in which it was built. The lake front has been relocated more than 500 meters away leaving the site landlocked. The dominating feature today is the elevated Gardiner Expressway that defines the southern edge of the site. In this new situation the fort has been marginalized, overlooked in the pursuit of urban growth. Arguably, all the aspects of architecture other than that of the ground (environment) and the living experience (programme), and their spatial and structural interpretations, can be considered ‘ornamental’. From this perspective, today’s abundance of parenthetic theories and all the efforts made to demonstrate them physically, together with the relentless race towards the next material, environmental science, and construction technique, can be considered an architectural ‘ornamentalism’. The race towards a new paradigm in theory, form, material and technique, both in practice and education, renders a false perception of abundance. The visual connection between the internal and external structure is highly appreciated.
