To help them get a feel for the tone of Saint Maud, Glass gave Clarke and Ehle a list of films to watch in preparation for filming. She rattles them off: “Persona, Through A Glass Darkly, The Devils, The Servant, Taxi Driver, and for a contemporary one, Ingrid Goes West.”
Two films that weren’t on the list, however, were Carrie and The Exorcist – even if, with her delicate face and piercing stare, Maud feels like an older sister to Sissy Spacek’s isolated teen. (And perhaps also a distant cousin to Linda Blair’s tweenager from hell!).
