In May 1972, Ona Dobratz and Janet Newman interviewed Steve Prefontaine for Runner’s World. He was 21, a new celebrity preparing for his first— and, alas, only—Olympic Games. On May 30, 1975, Pre, just 24 at the time, died in a car crash. Every September since 1979, runners have gathered to race in Coos Bay, Oregon, his hometown. Here, just in time for the 37th Prefontaine Memorial Run, we look back at RW’s coverage—including that early interview.
