SHAKILA Maharaj recently received an Exceptional Achievement Award at the Durban Tourism Business Awards, for championing disability inclusion in the tourism sector.
Each winner in the category won an international study tour worth R100 000.
Maharaj, a married mother of one, was recognised for her audio description app, which enables visually impaired persons to have access to tourist attractions through descriptive soundtracks.
