I might be alone in saying this, but I love January and February. They’re a refreshingly calm contrast to the busy, heady indulgence of December, where I finally have time to breathe, reflect and get my ducks in order. CUTTING OUT 1 Cut a strip of fabric to the height of your desired HRT units at their unfinished size. For example, if you want an HRT with an unfinished size of 2½in x 4½in (and therefore a 2in x 4in finished size), you would cut a 4½in wide strip. 2 Trim the left edge of your strip, so it’s square with the long edges. Align the top flat edge of the HRT template with the top of your strip, with the long straight edge at the left (Fig 1). The landscape on the To the Sea mini quilt is created using improv curve piecing. This means you are not given a template but are cutting your own curves freehand. These tips will help guide you through the process: ■ You can overlap the two strips of fabric and cut through both layers together, or you can cut one layer first before laying it on top of the other and ‘shadow’ cutting the second layer to match it. ■ Always use pieces that are longer than you want your finished piece to be, as you will trim the edges at the end. ■ Jo recommends using a smaller 28mm rotary cutter in order to make it easier for you to cut improv curves. ■ Keep your cutting lines smooth and…

If you have a lot of WIPs (works-in-progress) tucked away in your sewing room, chances are it’s because you’re overthinking things. How do I know? Let’s just say I’ve had my fair share of experience with overthunk thoughts. And they are rarely productive. Overthinking comes in many forms. There’s indecision (will this fabric be the right choice?), perfectionism (this isn’t turning out the way I wanted it to), and worry (what if I cut this fabric and I make a mistake?). All of them are exhausting in their own way. And often, rather than figuring out how we can deal with or combat those negative thoughts, we simply start a new project. How did the three of you first connect, and what made you join forces to create Color of Connection? Michelle: We first met on Instagram. When racial tensions and injustices surged throughout 2020, we sought out a way to connect with one another.
