Killdeer, Ripley, Hampshire, 21-27 January 2026
IT has been a long 20-year wait for a twitchable Killdeer on the British mainland – the last being a three-day bird at Blakeney, Norfolk, in 2006 – so the discovery of a first-winter near Ripley, Hampshire, on 21 January quickly set twitchers in motion towards the south-coast county. Those unable to arrive before nightfall on the day of discovery need not have worried, as the bird remained in the area until the end of the week, allowing hundreds of observers to connect.
The Hampshire bird is considered likely to be one of the two Killdeer recorded in Britain and Ireland during November, when birds were found on Skokholm, Pembrokeshire, and at South Slob, Co Wexford.
