Mercedes-Benz will extend the life cycles of its plug-in hybrid A-Class, B-Class and CLA in the wake of ailing EV sales that have “prompted a change in planning”, sources have told Autocar.
Mercedes joins other companies, including Audi, BMW, BYD, Ford and Renault (see box, below), which have also voiced long-term commitments to hybrid powertrains in recent weeks for the same reasons.
For Mercedes, this new lease of life for cars based on the MFA compact platform, will bring increased battery capacities and a rise in electric-only range.
The decision represents a slight backtracking from the German firm, which previously planned to cull various compact models, including the A-Class hatchback, to free up production capacity for its new line-up of EVs from next year.
