Born in the second half of the 20th century, the movement can be best understood as part of a broader late-modernist shift, rather than a genre in isolation. It extended modernism’s belief in progress and social purpose, but replaced lightness and refinement with weight, density and directness. In doing so, it reflected the pressures of post-war reconstruction and the need to build quickly, honestly and at scale. Experimental architecture isn’t always liveable architecture. That’s certainly true of the Pyramid House, a bold statement of future residential design built in 1981 as part of the developer-led HomeWorld 81 exhibition in Milton Keynes. One of Britain’s most familiar new towns, Milton Keynes was incorporated in 1967 and laid out along modernist lines, with design and planning overseen by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation. HomeWorld 81 was located in the town’s Bradwell Common district, one of 18 medieval villages swallowed up by the new town, and featured 36 ‘futuristic’ structures, all of which were displayed to the public as visitable show homes before being sold. Tadashi Kawamata grew up in Hokkaido, Japan, where his father worked as a coal miner. Now, inspired by the underground quarries used by Ruinart to age its champagne since the late 19th century, the artist has created a permanent installation in Reims. Conceived for the French champagne house’s ‘Conversations with Nature’ series, his observatory – a 6m-high wooden tower shaped like an inverted champagne bottle – mirrors the cathedral-like chalk cellars. ‘The cellar is a huge space that people can’t see from the ground, so I really wanted to connect with a totally empty space,’ says Kawamata. ‘The people go up to the sky.’ The project also includes one of the artist’s nests, which will cling to a corner of Ruinart’s historic building, and a signature treehouse, perched in the…

Eligo Studio has a special relationship with Liguria. From the Milanese design practice’s very beginnings, its founders Alberto Nespoli and Domenico Rocca have been in love with the cultural heritage of this fascinating coastal region of Italy. And it’s here that their newest project, Casa Arosio, a modernist treasure originally designed by Italian master Vico Magistretti, is located. The duo were not the first to turn their attention to Liguria, which stretches along the coastline around Genoa. Welcome to our annual gathering of the globe’s most galvanising design projects. The idea of cultural exchange lies at the heart of a new exhibition, ‘Beyond our Horizons: from Tokyo to Paris’, the sequel to a show that premiered last autumn at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo, attracting around 75,000 visitors over its three-week run. Presented at Chanel’s La Galerie du 19m, this is a tour de force of objects born out of collaborations between 40 French and Japanese artisans. Fiorin Fiorello Fiore, a newly opened natural wine bar on a busy road in Milan’s vibrant Cinque Giornate neighbourhood, could easily be mistaken for a concept store or art gallery. Heavy curtains cascade behind the floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, obscuring a dimly lit interior bathed in an eerie reddish glow. It feels almost like a portal to a more theatrical dimension. The ochre-red house at Burgfeld 136, in north Frankfurt, has two large, sunny bedrooms, a deep tub in the bathroom and a maid’s room. The two living spaces, furnished with oak sideboards by Austrian rationalist Franz Schuster, connect to an eat-in kitchen, designed by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, where everything – from the pantry canisters to the ironing board – is built into the teak cabinetry. It overlooks a long garden with fruit trees and vegetable beds. San Lorenzo is the silver world’s quiet creative innovator. Founded in 1970 by Ciro Cacchione, whose family had been producing traditional silver objects since the late 19th century, it established a design language that diverged from the classic decorative norm. Cacchione enlisted leading creatives to conjure up objects that were modern in aesthetic but created with the rigorous techniques his family had been championing for decades. Glow impact Strong silhouettes and sustainable design define a contemporary lamp For his ‘Gambosa’ table lamp for Spanish brand Marset, Mathias Hahn played with balance, geometry and colour. Made of three steel components, the lamp’s base, stem and shade seem to float effortlessly on top of each other, the warm glow of the light source gently bouncing off their emboldened silhouettes. The work of the London-based German designer is defined by an interplay of curved lines and minimalist forms, as well as a focus on longevity, with objects conceived with the idea of being easily assembled or their parts disposed of. Since Enrico Bonetti and Dominic Kozerski founded their practice, Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture, in New York more than a quarter of a century ago, they have made their sophisticated mark in the world of design. Among their many prestigious commissions are the Pace Gallery’s New York HQ, boutiques for Tod’s, Edition hotels around the world, and private residences for music producer Rick Rubin, fashion designer Donna Karan and hotelier André Balazs. The irony is that the firm never had an office that was as intentional and custom-made as the spaces it created for its clients. For 23 years, Bonetti and Kozerski worked from the same 1920s building in SoHo, steadily annexing square footage as their practice grew.
