Anna Murdoch Mann dePeyster, who has died aged 81, was the “constant, steely, polished consort of Rupert Murdoch, as he rose from ownership of a few Australian newspapers to global media tycoon”, said The Daily Telegraph. During their 30-plus-year marriage, she played an influential role in his business dealings, and was a “fiercely protective” mother to their three children, Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. Comparisons are often made between the Murdochs and the Roy family in the TV series Succession, but Anna Murdoch had little in common with the “chilly, detached” second wife of Logan Roy – save, perhaps, for her “elegance”.
