BIG PICTURE As Israel intensified its military activity in Lebanon, tens of thousands of people have been fleeing for safety. This Turkish navy ship arrived in Beirut with 300 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including tents, blankets, food parcels, cooking equipment and hygiene kits, then evacuated 2,000 Turkish citizens.
Options are limited for others in Lebanon. Evacuation orders from Israel cover over 25% of the country, leaving the southern regions practically deserted. But strikes have also occurred outside of this area, including the capital.
Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah militants, though as in Gaza, there are a significant number of civilian casualties, and an Israeli tank also fired on the headquarters of UN peacekeepers in the town of Naqoura.
